Sa Kambas ng Lipunan was a documentary made and narrated by Joey Velasco. Velasco was a religious painter most famous for his artwork titled "Hagap ng Pag-asa". It was a painting that was inspired by "The Last Supper" however, instead of Jesus' apostles, he was dining with the street children from the Philippines. His documentary revolved around the lives and the struggles of the children he painted.
Poverty in the Philippines has been around since the foundation of the country. We were once a slave nation, we had no free will, and we had no means to make it big and escape our situation. A bigger power prevented us from rising from the slums for 333 years. Eventually, the Philippines became free. We became a nation of our own, with our own language, with our own culture. We progressed, we developed, and for a while, we were the most prosperous nation in South-East Asia. However, the fact that it was only for a while, is the main issue of our situation today.
Millions of Filipinos are suffering from poverty. We have grown accustomed to seeing children on the street begging for alms, selling chicharon and quail eggs just to make a living. We see teenagers getting pregnant and raising families at the age of 14, we see parents running away from their children to escape their responsibilities. We are all aware of this situation but we refuse to accept its existence.
The fact that many Filipinos are poor is a statement that we have all come to accept. We have been so engrossed in our situation that we have come to neglect the welfare of the less fortunate. This was the message Joey Velasco was trying to convey. How can our country grow when only the rich get richer. How can the poor make it out from the slums when what the Government provides them barely gives them a fighting chance. How can we make the Philippines a better place for the less fortunate? Let's reflect upon this thought and see things in the eyes of Joey Velasco. Only then can everyone truly see the real Kambas ng ating Lipunan.
Good Job!
